Short Synopsis:
DIY filmmaker's summer camp madness unfolds in Palm Springs CA. Take a joy ride behind the scenes of director, Steve Balderson's latest film "The Casserole Club".
Review
Steve Balderson is a maverick indie filmmaker who has been described as 'the best kept secret in American cinema'. This inspirational documentary provides an insight into Balderson's unique approach to filmmaking, with the production of his latest film The Casserole Club.
Rather than focussing on the technical aspects of the filmmaking process, Camp Casserole is all about the strong bonds and relationships that develop between the cast and crew members. Committed to creating a familial atmosphere on set and forging real relationships between his actors which can be translated to screen, Balderson has the entire cast and crew living together before and during the shoot. The result is, as the actors say, an experience that is more like a summer camp than a job. It’s like a real life Boogie Nights (without the sex and drugs).
Much more than a 'making of' documentary, this film is about the joys, insanity and passion of low budget guerrilla filmmaking. As Balderson says, 'just running out, doing something, and running back. It's more exciting, it’s thrilling'. The film also raises questions about the future of independent cinema and art and the empowerment of indie filmmakers in today's changing cultural, industrial and economic climate, epitomised by Balderson's artistic integrity and the huge respect he commands from those who work with him.
